3 compounds 3 min read Research use only

Studies in the science of the nervous system have given us greater understanding of how neurones communicate, process information and control complex biological functions. Progress in the study of peptides has made available to researchers many tools that can be used to investigate the functions of neuronal communication, receptor activity and intracellular signalling.

Neuropeptides are naturally occurring signalling substances that help in the communication process between neurones and other specialised cells in the nervous system. In laboratory conditions synthetic analogues of neuropeptides are used to study these signalling processes to understand the receptors' interaction, cell-to-cell communication and neuroregulation. This is to increase knowledge about the physiology of the nervous system.

Brain Pathways Investigated

The nervous system has well-coordinated signalling systems that regulate communication between neurones and other specialised cells. Scientists study these integrated networks to better understand the role of signalling molecules in modulating neurone communication, receptor activity, intracellular signalling and the function of the nervous system as a whole.

Areas examined in the laboratory are the following:

  • Neurological signalling pathways
  • Cell communication by means of neuropeptides
  • Mechanisms of receptor-mediated signalling
  • Intracellular signalling and neuroregulation
  • Molecular neuroscience models, experimental
  • Neural systems cell-cell interactions

Collectively, these aspects of research provide a wider context for the study of molecular processes in nervous system biology. Furthermore, experimental work using synthetic peptides is useful for current neuropeptide research because it enables investigators to study complex signalling pathways in a controlled experimental setting.

Commonly Investigated Research Peptides

Synthetic peptides are extensively used in neuroscience investigations as experimental models for neuronal signalling and molecular communication studies. Scientists continue to develop a scientific understanding of neuroregulation and cellular signalling by studying how these compounds affect specific biological pathways.

Semax

Semax is a synthetic peptide that is often studied in experimental neuroscience. Laboratory studies explore its interaction with receptor-mediated signalling pathways, neuronal communication and intracellular signalling mechanisms. Such studies help build a general understanding of peptide-mediated neural signalling and molecular communication under well-controlled laboratory conditions.

DSIP

Another synthetic peptide often studied in laboratory experiments on neuropeptide signalling and neurological pathways is Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide (DSIP). The molecular properties, receptor interactions and behaviour in experimental models are discussed with the aim to gain insights into neuronal communication and peptide-mediated signalling. These investigations are intended to increase scientific knowledge of molecular neuroscience, not to determine therapeutic efficacy.

Providing Solid Laboratory Research

High-standard laboratory research requires the characterisation of materials and consistency in experimental procedures. Researchers usually verify the identity, analytical purity, stability and storage conditions of the materials used for scientific experiments.

Prime Peptides UK supports laboratory research by providing characterised products with associated documentation, including a Certificate of Analysis where applicable. Documentation assists researchers in verifying product specifications and analytical data before experimentation.

For Research Use Only

Research into neuronal communication, neuroregulation and molecular signalling is yielding more and more insights into the complicated biological mechanisms which control nervous system functions. Synthetic peptides continue to be useful as research tools for studying such biological pathways in a controlled research setting.

Prime Peptides UK supplies research reagents for research use only. The products are labelled as Research Use Only (RUO) and not for human consumption or therapeutic, cosmetic or veterinary use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Semax retain any of the hormonal activity of ACTH?

No, and that absence is the point. Semax is an analogue of the ACTH(4-10) fragment stripped of hormonal activity, which is what makes it usable as a clean neuropeptide research tool.

Why are Semax and Selank studied as a pair?

Both came out of the Russian Institute of Molecular Genetics and share much of the same literature. Semax is the ACTH fragment analogue; Selank is built on the immune peptide tuftsin with a stabilising tripeptide tail. The pairing is effectively a standard in the field.

How does DSIP differ from the other two?

It was isolated rather than designed - recovered from rabbit cerebral venous blood during slow wave sleep, which is where its name comes from. It remains a reference compound in circadian and sleep architecture work.

Do these compounds need special handling?

All three are short, highly water-soluble peptides with short plasma half-lives. They are stable lyophilised but sensitive to repeated freeze-thaw once in solution, so aliquot after reconstitution where the study design allows.
